A Sweet Design

As a small child I was always drawn to design. The design of homes, cars, gadgets you name it...to me, it was all about the aesthetics and presentation. Which is why I couldn't wait to get to my grandparents house for the holidays..to view their Christmas candy dish which was always filled with the most beautifully designed candy ever.....Ribbon Candy!

I would hover over the dish and be mesmerized by the vivid colors and swirls. I only partook in the eating of this wondrous candy once as I found out I did not like the taste, but the images of the bright hues and circular shapes would stay with me to this day. I even have Christmas ornaments that are replicas of Ribbon Candy but made from glass. And when it's time to decorate the tree, I pull them out of their container very gingerly and hold them in my hands and still stare at them in wonder and tell my daughter the story of how excited I was to get to my grandparents house. It's the little things that bring back memories of childhood.

  1. What a sweet memory, Bunny! You can be so sentimental, it is so sweet to see that part of you. I glad you had a good time with your hubby. I am almost done with my Christmas shopping too. I just need to find something for my Mother who is so hard to get for. Oh well, it will come me. Love you lots, Martha

  3. I remember this candy too and never really liked it either. I found it more fun to look at than eat. I think it was the same for most people because whenever I did attempt to eat one, they were always all stuck together and it just wasn't worth the effort. Now chocolate, I'd have used a crowbar to get to!

  4. I remember that candy well. What a great post. I got goosebumps when I read it. That means it was touching to me somehow -- as I only get goosebumps when something really moves me. :) I did try some of it last year and though, ugh, how did I ever eat it before. LOL! What a small world that you actually dated someone from Jordan while in HS. We will stay in Jordan for Sightseeing Saturday as I have so many places to share -- it has a lot of history! Just like with Jerusalem, we get the best of both worlds-- visting family and all the historical sites. Hope you are having a great weekend! :) Blessings, Tammy

  7. Oh thanks for the memory! My grandmother always "displayed" ribbon candy during the holidays. I don't think anyone ever ate it! Wow, I can still remember the table and dish that held it. I completely forgot about that until I saw your picture. Thanks for sharing! ~Lisa

  9. This is a wonderful post. I so enjoyed reading it and appreciate you sharing this with us. One reason this season is so wonderful I believe is we all seem to travel back to our child hood memories of Christmas's with our sweet grandparents or parents.
I always love coming by your site
