When I grow up

As a kid when thinking about your future, of course you have no idea as to what lies ahead let alone a career, but when asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I always came up with "Gift Wrapper". That was the ideal job for me. You get to play with pretty paper and bows and design and decorate other peoples purchases AND get paid for it. I remember going to JC Pennys with my mom and going to the gift wrapping area so full of excitement and anticipating the numerous boxes perched on the wall in varieties of paper. There was the happy birthday box, the wedding box, the manly box, the baby shower bow with the little plastic stork addition on it and all the other boxes that symbolize the occasion. But alas...the only gift wrapping jobs I ever snagged were the ones for my self, but boy...I must say, I can wrap a pretty mean gift.

Then as time went by, I actually developed my interests and started to take notice of my assets and thought I could be a "Concierge". I love to talk to people, love to direct them in the right direction, interested in local attractions, like helping people but most of all...I love hotels. I could live in one for the rest of my life if I had too...especially a 5 star hotel. I could wear a spiffy uniform and be gracious and very informative and everyone one in the place would just love me because I would know where all the action was and where to find a dog groomer at 1:00 am . But again...it was not to be.

So after stumbling in and out of various mindless and mediocre office jobs, my mother who was an optician, needed help at her work. She asked me if I could come in on a Saturday and do some paperwork for her and that I didn't have to do anything else, which was great because I didn't have a clue as to what she did. Well...long story short....I stayed for almost 21 years.
I became an optician. I loved my job all the while being creative and mingling with the public...and believe me..there are some doozies out there but in general, if you treat people kind and with respect, it'll come back at you.

Which leads me to this questions...If you weren't doing what you ended up doing...job, career-wise, just what would you have done? Now that your all grown up and you've experienced life and all that it has to offer and I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume your smarter now...just what would it be?

Me? I've always thought that if I ever won the lotto, I'd go back to school and become an Architect. I love drawing diagrams and blue prints of things and if Eric ever said to me, "Hey, babe, wanna demo the house and start from scratch"....well, needless to say I'd need to find out what drug he's on and then run out and buy a sledge hammer cuz I'd be in bunny heaven.
Interior decorator and all around antique/junk dealer would be a close 2nd.
So...how 'bout you all?

  1. Wow! I don't know anyone who wanted to be a gift wrapper. Ha! I'm with you on concierge. I think my 11 year old would be right there too. He loves staying in hotels. We love travel. I've alwayss thought being a host on the Discovey Channel, travelling to different locations, trying the cuisine, seeing the sites, meeting the people and reporting on it would be great. I'd also like to own a farm and help save injured or abandoned animals of all sorts. Maybe travel to an African nation to teach young orphans. I have big dreams that involve being far away from home. And yet "home" is my favorite place to be. Hope you are having a great weekend Bunny! :) Tammy PS maybe you could start a project with a small sledgehammer first. ;)

  2. OMG Bunny, I always wanted to be an architect!!! YES! To this day, I look at buildings and houses with the constant idea of HOW DID THEY BUILD THAT? But I do love what I do, and what I am aiming to do and that is to be an architect of books for kids....in French and English....so I guess I found something that I love!

    Have a great day! Anita

  3. I wanted to work the Haunted House on the midway at the NC State Fair when I was little. I so much wanted to work for the fair but only at the Hanuted House. My love of dark and twisty things never went away :) I was a Paralegal for 23 years and now I am doing exactly what I want to be doing, working on my art full time!

  4. Okay-hope you are ready for this, but then, you did ask..although when I was older, I thought being an Interior Decorator would do it for me, the truth is, when I was very young (and I'm retired now, so I'm talking 50+ years ago (!) I wanted to be a vampire...now wait, don't assume I'm talkin' these gloamourous teenage types...I used to wait til my Mom was asleep, then sneak out and watch creature features late at night, and I thought "I want to be able to stay up all night, wear black, and fly! And turn into a bat or a puff of smoke if I felt like it!"
Had nothing to do with the bloodsucking part, just the freedom...oh, and I guess, living forever...I was more upset when I found out they were fictional than I was about Santa Claus...

If I could do it all over again I would stayed in college majored in journalism and work for a magazine or be a writer. Would love to publish a novel.
Great post....girl your still young enough to go back and be a architect.

  7. I like this game! I'd make my whole living from art if I could, but if I had another life I'd train in either medicine or psychology. Or maybe I'd be criminal profiler!

  8. Oh gosh! I think I would be a teacher or a lawyer (I LOVE to argue!) if I wasn't doing what I was doing now. OR running my own little country store! Now that would be heaven!

  12. Hey Bunny! Long time no see. I've been out of the loop for a bit! I love this post! I would go back to school to study forensic pathology so I could do crime scene processing, or even become a coroner. I know, morbid, right? But I am obsessed with true crime and solving them. Hope you are doing well! Kori xoxo

  13. Hah, what a cool posting! I loved all your dream jobs and can definitely relate to the "hey babe" what if scenario, but for me it would be Quantum Physicist.

Oh and I can say there were many a hotel I could have used your services when I was traveling on business years ago. ;-)

  14. Hi Bunny, I always wanted to be a fashion designer. Funny, though, about being an optician. When I was a kid I had the world's best optician. Her first name was Beryl but I can't remember her last name. I was probably in the 4th grade when I had to start wearing glasses and through the years I admired her so much. I enjoyed that heated sand thing that would help shape the sides of my glasses. Wow, a trip down memory lane...thanks!

    Bonnie

PS - I had an uncle that was an interior designer and his designs were awesome!

  15. Great post! I have to say I'm doing what I've always wanted to do. Work on my art. I love decorating, design and just doing anything creative. My degree is in commercial art so I'm not too far off. Only problem is I got my degree in the 70's before computers.....soooo I got left behind. If I had to do it all over I'd go back to school when needed to update my graphic design computer skills.

  16. I think you know my answer, but I'll tell you anyway cause you asked. I'd be a musical comedy actress/dancer/singer. My love in life; performing.

    Ahhh, I can dream.

  17. I am lucky. I did not end up doing something other than what I wanted to do. I absolutely love what I do and dont know what I would want to do otherwise. I have always loved taking things apart and fixing them. Now people ask me to dream up a gadget to do a particular job. I get to design it, model it, drawing it, machine it, assemble it, test it, and take it to the field to train folks on it. Nothing like creating something soup to nuts. Architecture would be cool but I just dont do wood.
